Travelling through Albania by campervan is a fun and easy way to experience the country. It lets you take your time to enjoy nature, explore its towns, and meet friendly locals.
And since I know this is one of the most asked questions when it comes to travelling here, I decided to share some tips you might find useful before getting ready for your new adventure. Let’s go through them together.
Why Explore Albania by Campervan?
Albania is a destination full of surprises.
Picture yourself cruising along the turquoise waters of the Albanian Riviera or winding through valleys that are home to lovely villages in the north. Travelling by campervan here gives you the ultimate freedom to stop wherever the road calls you—it can be a beach, a peaceful lakeside, or a mountain pass.
Albania is also budget-friendly (compared to many Western European countries), so you can easily have fun without overspending.
But what truly sets Albania apart, though, is the people. The warmth and generosity of locals are unmatched. It’s not uncommon for someone to invite you for a coffee or even share a home-cooked meal when you park near their village. This genuine hospitality (more common in the countryside) is just one more reason why Albania can leave you surprised!

Preparing for Your Albanian BY Campervan Journey
Before hitting the road, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are some tips to ensure you have the best journey:
Driving in Albania
Driving in Albania can be an adventure in itself! While the main highways are generally in good condition, some rural roads are rough and narrow. Drive cautiously, especially in mountainous areas, and be ready for occasional encounters with livestock on the road.
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended, as is checking your insurance coverage for Albania.
Parking and Wild Camping
Wild camping is generally allowed in Albania, and you’ll find plenty of beautiful places to park overnight. Whether it’s a quiet beach or a peaceful mountain valley, the choice is yours.
Just be sure to follow local rules and leave the area as you found it. If you’d rather have access to facilities like showers or Wi-Fi, there are also affordable campsites run by local families that offer a comfortable place to stay.

Travel Insurance
Having travel insurance that covers vehicle-related issues is essential. Breakdown services can be scarce in remote areas, so being prepared can save you a lot of hassle.
Top Destinations for Campervan Adventures
Here’s a glimpse of what you can look forward to when travelling through Albania by campervan:
The Albanian Riviera
Stretching along the Ionian Sea, the Riviera is a highlight of any trip to Albania. Visit beaches like Ksamil, Gjipe, Himara and Dhërmi for crystal-clear waters and secluded coves. Many van lifers park by the beach to wake up to the sound of the waves; it’s a truly magical experience.
Theth National Park
This alpine paradise is a must for nature lovers. With its dramatic peaks, waterfalls, and traditional stone houses, Theth feels like you’re part of a fairytale. Be aware that the roads leading to Theth are challenging, so a 4×4 camper might be necessary.
Berat and Gjirokastër
Both UNESCO World Heritage sites, these towns are known for their history, culture and traditions. Berat, known as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” is famous for its Ottoman-era architecture, while Gjirokastër is home to cobbled streets and a magnificent castle overlooking the valley.

Lake Shkodër
Located in northern Albania, Shkodër Lake is a great place for a more relaxing vibe. There are several campsites along its shores, from where you can enjoy the stunning sunset views and plenty of opportunities for kayaking or fishing.
Tips for a Smooth Journey
Before exploring Albania by campervan, consider these tips:
- Stock Up on Supplies: Supermarkets are available in cities, but rural areas may have limited options. Make sure to stock up on essentials before heading to remote regions.
- Connectivity: Local SIM cards with generous data plans are inexpensive and widely available. Operators like ONE.AL and Vodafone are popular choices.
- Cash Is King: While major towns and cities accept cards, smaller villages may require cash. (I suggest you keep some Lek with you, just in case.) ATMs are available but plan ahead for remote areas.
- Local Etiquette: Albanians are incredibly welcoming. A simple greeting or gesture of respect can go a long way in building rapport.
When to Visit Albania BY CAMPERVAN
The best time for a campervan trip to Albania is during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). These months offer mild weather, and fewer tourists. Summer is also beautiful, especially along the coast, but it can be busy and very hot.
Ready for the Adventure?
Albania by campervan is all about embracing freedom and spontaneity. You’re the one who decides what to visit and what adventures to participate in. Think about navigating beautiful mountain roads, sipping coffee in a quaint village, or stargazing by a quiet lakeshore. It sounds like the experience of a lifetime!
