Peshkopi

Peshkopi, the capital of Dibër County, is situated in the mountainous regions of northeastern Albania. It is unique among Albanian county capitals, as it does not share its name with the county itself. With a population of 13,251 according to the 2011 census, Peshkopi lies near the Black Drin river and is proximate to both the Macedonian border and the Albanian capital, Tirana.

The town is renowned for its thermal waters and verdant agriculture, which, along with its natural beauty, is fostering a growing reputation as a destination for outdoor activities like hiking and mountain biking. Peshkopi is also located near significant heritage sites such as Mount Korabi, the Balkans’ third tallest mountain, and the birthplace of Albania’s national hero, Gjerg Kastrioti. Historically, Peshkopi derives its name from the Albanian word for bishop, reflecting its past under the Archbishopric of Ohrid. Throughout various periods, it has seen the presence of Illyrian tribes, Ottoman conquests, and significant uprisings, including participation in Albanian revolts against Ottoman rule and conflicts during World War II. Today, Peshkopi is a town evolving with its landscape, embracing both its deeply rooted history and its potential as a hub for eco-tourism and adventure.
