Gjirokastër

Gjirokastër is a city in southern Albania, known for its cultural and historical significance. The city’s architecture, featuring stone houses and castle-like structures, has earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Gjirokastër is situated on the slopes of the Wide Mountain and is characterized by its rugged terrain and lack of vegetation. The city experiences substantial rainfall in winter, leading to numerous streams that flow through its neighborhoods.

This city has traditionally been a major centre in southern Albania, with historical ties to nearby regions such as Janina, the Albanian coastline, and Vlorë. Its geographical position near the Drino River and the mountainous backdrop distinguishes it from other cities. Post-communism, Gjirokastër has expanded, adding new areas to its urban fabric while maintaining its iconic neighbourhoods such as Cfakë, Hazmurat, and Palorto. The city is a key point of connection to other important areas in southern Albania, including Kurvelesh and Lunxhëria.
