Kavajë

Kavaja is a city located in central Albania, known for its rich history and pivotal role in trade during the Ottoman period. The city first appeared in records in the 15th century and was a key point along the ancient Roman trade route, Via Egnatia, linking it to other significant cities like Durrës and Elbasan. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Kavaja became a bustling trading centre, at one point surpassing Durrës in the number of houses within its borders.

The city was also noted for its traditional industries, such as ceramic pottery, carpet weaving, and copper work. During the communist era, Kavaja transformed into an industrial hub and an agricultural centre for the region. It played a significant role in Albania’s transition to democracy, with citizens bravely demonstrating for freedom and democracy in 1990. This led to a tragic conflict with the police, resulting in the death of a young man, Josif Budo, who is commemorated in the city today.

Kavaja is also connected to the world-renowned actor Aleksandër Moisiu, whose family originated from the city. Moisiu, born in Trieste, was celebrated on German and Austrian stages in the early 20th century and is remembered with pride by the people of Kavaja. The actor’s former home served as a children’s nursery during the communist regime.
