Exploring Albania Through the Lens of Cristina

Photographers see the world differently. They find stories in shadows, meaning in movement, and magic in the mundane.

That’s why it’s always so interesting to talk with one. You get a completely fresh perspective on places you’ve seen many times, but maybe never truly noticed.

Cristina Lozada is a 41-year-old professional photographer from Peru with over 13 years of experience, whose’ perspective led her to Albania. What started as just another stop on a sabbatical became something more, a place that quietly tugged at her heart and made her want to stay.

Just three months after leaving, she returned, this time, to stay. Inspired by her travels through the Balkans and a recommendation from a friend, she chose Albania as her new home. Through her lens, Cristina captures the small moments that make this country so special: the warmth of its people, the light filtering through autumn leaves, the stories written into every street corner.

In this interview, she shares what drew her in, what keeps her inspired, and how living in Albania has shaped both her art and her everyday life.

Join us as we go through her story.

Inspired by Albania’s Diversity

Cristina has found her creative spark in Albania’s diversity. From the warmth of the people to the variety of stories that unfold before her, the country has become a source of endless inspiration for her work.

“Albania is an interesting country for my photographic approach. The diversity of people and stories I encounter makes it more interesting. I can photograph different people and stories. I’m inspired by diversity, kindness, and how friendly people are.”

The local culture and welcoming atmosphere provides an endless source of inspiration for her work, where each shot tells a unique narrative.

Nature, Architecture & Light

Albania’s natural beauty is another element that has influenced Cristina’s photography. The parks, beaches, and unique architectural styles of various cities are all key features that stand out to her.

“I really like the parks in Albania. They have beautiful trees, colourful leaves and flowers, and the sun has a warm light, especially in autumn. I like its beaches and the architecture mixed with nature in several cities.”

The contrast between natural and urban landscapes offers an array of photographic opportunities that Cristina finds captivating.

Hidden Corners Most Tourists Don’t See

One of the advantages of working as a photographer in Albania is the opportunity to explore hidden gems that many visitors may overlook. Cristina recalls one such experience when a couple of families hired her to accompany them to remote beaches in the hinterland of Durres.

“These are beautiful, hard-to-reach beaches that I probably wouldn’t have known without them. I was able to see places that I might not have known without photography.”

It is these hidden spots that help her capture the country’s essence in a way few others can.

Connecting Through Art

Living in Albania has also opened doors to unique collaborations with local artists and creatives

“I’ve met a couple of interesting photographers. One of them made a book about Albanian history and life. I also collaborated with an Albanian dance group, and I was able to learn more about their typical dances.”

These collaborations have not only given her access to deeper aspects of Albanian culture but have also provided unique insights into the traditions and stories that shape the country.

Adapting to a New Culture

Every photographer faces challenges when adapting to a new environment, and for Cristina, building relationships in Albania was a gradual process.

“I have had to get people to know me little by little. To be able to achieve a connection despite the difference in culture and language. I am a curious and sociable person, I have adapted facing my fears and insecurities like everyone else.”

Her perseverance in overcoming cultural and language barriers has allowed her to create meaningful connections, a crucial element for a successful photographer.

The Importance of Family and Community

Albanian society’s strong family ties have left a lasting impression on Cristina. She notes that family bonds in Albania are similar to those found in Latin American cultures, with parents continuing to care for their children well into adulthood.

“I see that they are very close to their family, like Latinos. They are affectionate and united with each other. They always meet, and mothers continue to take care of their children even if they are adults, as in South America, for example.”

These familial connections contribute to a deep sense of community that Cristina has come to appreciate in her work and daily life.

A Slower, Simpler Pace

One aspect of Albania that Cristina particularly enjoys is the slower pace of life. Compared to the fast-moving environments she has encountered elsewhere, the more laid-back atmosphere in Albania has influenced her lifestyle.

“I think it’s a quiet life. People take their time to enjoy coffee and friends. There is a lot of walking and safe walking on the streets. You see many groups of friends and families having a good time and not in too much of a hurry.”

This slower pace has allowed her to appreciate life’s simple pleasures and find a balance between work and relaxation.

How She’d Capture Albania in a Photo

When asked how she would capture Albania in just one image, Cristina thinks of something powerful and symbolic:

“I think it would be a photograph where, in some way, the red flag with the black eagle would be present. I see its importance for the Albanians, and I see it present in many places, as well as the symbol that they make with their arms, simulating the eagle. I think it says a lot about nationalism and love for their country.”

Advice for Creatives Considering Albania

To fellow photographers or artists thinking of making the move, Cristina has a clear message:

“I think it’s a good place to do it. Albania is a country that is not yet saturated with so many new people, and people are friendly and curious for the same reason. It has a lot of culture and fresh history to share. People are affordable and beautiful. The landscapes are beautiful, the streets have a lot of urban art. There is a lot of material to create and make different types of art.”

Cristina Lozada’s photography is associated with her personal journey through Albania, exploring and capturing the country’s beauty, its people, and the emotions that unite them. Through her lens, Albania comes alive as a country full of beauty, culture, and stories waiting to be shared.
