“Albania is an interesting country for my photographic approach. The diversity of people and stories I encounter makes it more interesting. I can photograph different people and stories. I’m inspired by diversity, kindness, and how friendly people are.”

“I really like the parks in Albania. They have beautiful trees, colourful leaves and flowers, and the sun has a warm light, especially in autumn. I like its beaches and the architecture mixed with nature in several cities.”

Hidden Gems: Off-the-Beaten-Path Discoveries

One of the advantages of working as a photographer in Albania is the opportunity to explore hidden gems that many visitors may overlook. Cristina recalls one such experience when a couple of families hired her to accompany them to remote beaches in the hinterland of Durres.

“These are beautiful, hard-to-reach beaches that I probably wouldn’t have known without them. I was able to see places that I might not have known without photography.”

It is these hidden spots that help her capture the country’s essence in a way few others can.

Building Connections Through Collaboration

Cristina’s work has also led to collaborations with local artists, enriching her understanding of Albania’s vibrant art scene.

“I’ve met a couple of interesting photographers. One of them made a book about Albanian history and life. I also collaborated with an Albanian dance group, and I was able to learn more about their typical dances.”

These collaborations have not only given her access to deeper aspects of Albanian culture but have also provided unique insights into the traditions and stories that shape the country.

Challenges and Adaptations in a New Culture

Every photographer faces challenges when adapting to a new environment, and for Cristina, building relationships in Albania was a gradual process.

“I have had to get people to know me little by little. To be able to achieve a connection despite the difference in culture and language. I am a curious and sociable person, I have adapted facing my fears and insecurities like everyone else.”

Her perseverance in overcoming cultural and language barriers has allowed her to create meaningful connections, a crucial element for a successful photographer.

The Importance of Family and Community

Albanian society’s strong family ties have left a lasting impression on Cristina. She notes that family bonds in Albania are similar to those found in Latin American cultures, with parents continuing to care for their children well into adulthood.

“I see that they are very close to their family, like Latinos. They are affectionate and united with each other. They always meet, and mothers continue to take care of their children even if they are adults, as in South America, for example.”

These familial connections contribute to a deep sense of community that Cristina has come to appreciate in her work and daily life.

Embracing a Slower Pace of Life

One aspect of Albania that Cristina particularly enjoys is the slower pace of life. Compared to the fast-moving environments she has encountered elsewhere, the more laid-back atmosphere in Albania has influenced her lifestyle.

“I think it’s a quiet life. People take their time to enjoy coffee and friends. There is a lot of walking and safe walking on the streets. You see many groups of friends and families having a good time and not in too much of a hurry.”

This slower pace has allowed her to appreciate life’s simple pleasures and find a balance between work and relaxation.

The Essence of Albania: A Photograph of Patriotism

When asked how she would capture the essence of Albania in a single photograph, Cristina thinks of the country’s flag, a symbol that represents both national pride and unity.

“I think it would be a photograph where, in some way, the red flag with the black eagle would be present. I see its importance for the Albanians, and I see it present in many places, as well as the symbol that they make with their arms, simulating the eagle. I think it says a lot about nationalism and love for their country.”

For fellow photographers and creatives considering a move to Albania, Cristina offers valuable advice.

“I think it’s a good place to do it. Albania is a country that is not yet saturated with so many new people, and people are friendly and curious for the same reason. It has a lot of culture and fresh history to share. People are affordable and beautiful. The landscapes are beautiful, the streets have a lot of urban art. There is a lot of material to create and make different types of art.”
