Living Albania: A Traveler’s Honest Take on Culture, Cuisine, and Life

Discover Alvin’s experience living in Albania as a full-time traveler, exploring its culture, cuisine, affordability, and day-to-day life.

Drawn by the curiosity of the unknown, Alvin Toro, full-time traveller and Editor at Departures, quickly found himself captivated by Albania’s natural beauty, unique culture, and simplicity. With a lifestyle rooted in exploration, Alvin has now embraced Albania as a destination that perfectly balances the thrill of discovery with the comfort of familiarity.

His attention to detail and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures give him a refreshing perspective on what makes Albania truly special. Ready to have a look at his journey?

First Impressions and Daily Life

Alvin arrived in Albania with an open mind, and his first impressions didn’t disappoint.

“I came to Albania for the first time in 2020 as I explored Eastern Europe and the Balkans.”

Albania stood out to him with its hidden charms and unassuming appeal. His daily routine remains consistent, centred around coffee, work, and entertainment—simple pleasures that are easy to maintain no matter where he is.

The Taste of Albania

As a self-proclaimed carnivore, Alvin finds delight in the country’s meat-heavy cuisine.

“All the meat and the whole Zgara culture. As an avid carnivore this is great.”

The local grilling traditions perfectly complement his dietary preferences, making Albanian food a standout aspect of his time here.

Culture and Language

Alvin finds Albania’s social customs distinct and fascinating.

“Social norms are very unique in Albania compared to other countries.”

Despite not speaking Albanian, he encounters no issues with communication, thanks to the prevalence of English, Spanish, and Italian. These factors make it easy for him to immerse himself in everyday life.

Getting Around and Staying Connected

Transportation in Albania has been a mixed bag for Alvin.

“Very accessible. Very reliable. Not very predictable.”

And we get him! Indeed, the transportation infrastructure is not the best in the country yet. On the other hand, he appreciates the country’s reliable internet, which plays a crucial role in his work as Editor at Departures. “It’s very good,” he says.

Housing and Expenses

Finding housing in Albania has been relatively smooth for Alvin, though not without its challenges. He notes the presence of online scams.

“With the exception of the large amount of scammers online, I’ve found the process easy and with a lot more flexibility than in other countries.”

When it comes to daily expenses, cash is king, and he finds most costs affordable, save for imported goods and electronics.

Safety and Social Life

Alvin describes Albania as “very safe, even at night,” which allows him to fully enjoy his time exploring the country. His weekends are often spent in social activities like eating and drinking with friends—a vital part of his experience.

A Lifestyle That Fits

Living in Albania hasn’t drastically changed Alvin’s lifestyle, but it has offered him a balance between the things he loves and the quirks he can easily adapt to.

“Love most things about the country and can comfortably live with the things I don’t.”

Alvin’s experience in Albania offers a glimpse into what makes this country an interesting place to live and explore. From the satisfying food culture to its welcoming day-to-day life, Albania has given him a way to feel at home while continuing his journey as a traveller.

With a sense of safety, affordability, and a lifestyle that fits his nomadic spirit, Alvin’s experience reflects a genuine appreciation for the country’s character. Albania, for him, is not just another destination. It’s a place where life feels grounded, simple, and worth slowing down for.
