It was a truly generous gesture.”

Another heartwarming experience occurred in Himarë, where the entire family and neighbors welcomed Janny into their home. “We also visited Ali Pasha Fortress near Himarë, where we were the only tourists. The man who took our admission fee gave us a private tour and sang for us in the fortress—his voice echoed beautifully in the acoustics. It was such a special moment.”

One of the things Janny finds particularly unique about Albanian culture is the close-knit nature of families, especially the way the older generation is integrated into daily life. “In Albania, it’s common to see an old man walking arm in arm with his teenage granddaughter, or a grandma with her grandson,” she notes. “It’s lovely to see young men and older men spending time together, sharing coffee and conversation. The elderly are respected and play a vital role in caring for children while parents work, which is different from many Western countries where such bonds are often overlooked.”

Despite occasional frustrations, like noisy construction and the need for more protection of the country’s natural beauty, Janny finds the sense of community and connection to the locals far outweigh the challenges. “I don’t immerse myself in expat communities,” she explains. “Instead, I’ve chosen to embrace a deeper connection with the locals, and that has made all the difference.”
