My Tips for Finding a Job in Albania as a Foreigner

Moving to Albania & seeking employment? Discover some tips and tricks on how to find a job in Albania as a foreigner.

Are you planning to relocate to Albania and need a job here? No matter how challenging this may seem, let us tell you: It’s not impossible.

However, it takes a native to fully understand the local job market and guide you in finding potential job opportunities, so keep reading for some great helpful tips.

1. Research the Job Market in Albania

It’s important to know what kind of jobs are mostly demanded in Albania.

However, it’s just as important to acknowledge that foreigners have limited options when it comes to working in certain industries (like banking, finance, some customer service profiles, etc).

This is for three main reasons:

  1. Proficiency in native Albanian is often a prerequisite.
  2. Employes might prioritize hiring natives over foreigners.
  3. Certain roles are influenced by personal connections, with individuals often securing employment through recommendations and networks.

However, on the flip side of the coin, other job opportunities might be doable for a foreigner. Working remotely for a local or international company is also an alernative. (We’ll expand on this aspect further below.)

2. Work Permits and Visa Regulations

Before seeking employment in Albania, make sure you have the necessary work permits and visas. Different visa categories exist for employment, business, and residency purposes.

Some employers in Albania might assist with the visa process for foreign employees. Ensure clear communication regarding visa sponsorship during the job application process.

3. Benefit From the Power of the Network

Networking is a game-changer when it comes to finding a job in Albania. Reach out to expatriates already working in the country and join online forums or professional networks to gain insights and potential referrals.

Joining Facebook groups can be helpful in finding potential opportunities; however, remember to be aware of scams.

4. Polish Your Resume

One of the most important steps when applying for a new position is having a resume that aligns with the job requirements. This is a standard rule that applies in any job position. Highlight relevant skills, experiences, and qualifications that match the employers’ requirements.

Many employers readily accept resumes in English, and some even specify it as a requirement, which is a huge advantage.

Jobalytics is a helpful tool for checking whether your CV matches the job requirements based on the keywords you have used.

5. Language Proficiency

While English is widely spoken, having proficiency in Albanian could significantly increase your chances of getting hired. You can always enrol in Albanian language courses or language exchange programs to learn/improve your language skills. However, be aware that Albanian is not easy to learn and may take considerable time, so it might not be the best option if you need a job quickly.

6. Job Application Process

Now, the million-dollar question is, where do you apply?

First, living in an advanced digital world like ours means your options are not limited to working only on-site. Fortunately, you may also consider hybrid and remote job opportunities if that’s something you fit in.

Job Online Portals

Well-known online portals to find jobs in Albania include:

Duapune

Njoftimepune

It’s important to note that many of these jobs require knowledge of the Albanian language. However, English is usually required in ‘digital profiles’ like graphic design, web development, and content writing, while other languages like Italian and Spanish can be required in customer service positions (call centre).

Company Websites

Company websites are another way of applying for a job. Search for the company you’re interested in, and see if they’re looking to hire. Usually, you may find such opportunities under “Career”, “Join our team”, or similar sections. Some websites have a fill-out form where you can attach your CV to the desired role.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a great platform to find jobs, especially if you’re lucky enough and the number of applicants is not overwhelming. I’ve noticed that many jobs receive over 200 applications, which can be discouraging and make you hesitant to apply in the first place.

Also, after a quick analysis, I’ve come to realize it’s much easier to find a job in Albania (due to the smaller number of applications) compared to other larger countries), This significantly increases your chances of securing a position.

When searching for a job, you can use filters to specify the features you want, as shown in the image below.

Another helpful tip is to reach out to recruitment agents directly, whether on LinkedIn or through email.

Working as a Freelancer

Working as a freelancer is a simple, but not so simple, solution. First, if you’re unfamiliar with the market, getting clients might take a while. That being said, if you don’t have a financial backup plan, this could be risky, especially when living in a new country.

On the other hand, if you manage to work for a client or more or even for yourself (solopreneurship), the rewards might be considerable. However, having a backup plan in this case is just as important!

Some freelancing websites include Upwork, Fiver, Indeed, PeoplePerHour.

working remotely from a local or international company

Working remotely from Albania, whether for a local or international company, is another alternative to consider. This arrangement offers numerous benefits, including the flexibility to work from the comfort of your home or any location you choose (Working with a sea view could be it!).

Look out for companies that offer remote opportunities in Albania, or, even better, try to find an opportunity at an international company that allows you to work from anywhere in the world. Such positions such positions could offer potentially higher salary standards, improving your quality of life.

It’s important to check all the politics, contributions and guidelines if you decide to work remotely for an international company while living in Albania.

Bonus Tip: What to Wear on an Interview in Albania

Just like in any other interview, a professional dress code is preferred.

Choose clean, well-fitted clothing in muted colours, avoiding anything flashy or revealing. Keep accessories and grooming minimal and professional, focusing on presenting a polished appearance.

Dressing appropriately demonstrates your seriousness and suitability for the position and increases your chances of making a positive impression on your potential employer.

Be Patient and Consistent

Finding a job in Albania as a foreigner may take time and perseverance. Be patient and constant in your job search efforts to increase your chances of getting the desired role. Remember, no matter where in the world, just like in dating, ghosting can happen in professional life too. It’s important to be consistent and not demotivated from potential rejections.
