The internet is one of the most important components that connects people with the world around them within seconds. Its importance is especially valued when travelling or relocating to a new country, whether to explore or to work (it’s impossible to work without a good connection anyway).
That being said, if you’re planning on coming to Albania and are wondering about the internet speed here, we’ll dive into how fast and reliable these connections are in places like Tirana, Durres, and beyond.
Our data expert, Eliseo Kolicaj, has analyzed the internet speed details in some of Albania’s main cities, providing valuable insights into the country’s connectivity landscape.
Internet Speed analysis in main Albanian cities
Our team has conducted an interpretation of internet speed and reliability based on real-life, well-researched data in the main Albanian cities mentioned below. As a reference, here’s the graph representing the average upload and download speed in these cities. We have ranked them from fastest to slowest using a combined average of the upload and download speeds for each city.
TiranA
The internet connection in Tirana is great most of the time. However, its quality (as in any other city) depends on the operator you’ve chosen to contract with. Some operators work better than others. A few well-known brands are Vodafone, Digicom, One, Tring, and Abissnet.
I’ve opted for Vodafone and have been quite satisfied so far. While occasional connectivity issues occur, they’re infrequent and haven’t significantly impacted my overall experience.
Now, let’s check some figures to get an idea of the internet speed in Tirana.
With an average download speed of 86 Mbps and an upload speed of 29 Mbps, it offers the fastest internet in the country. The large number of tests (29,158) and the consistent speed range (75 Mbps to 96 Mbps for downloads and 24 Mbps to 31 Mbps for uploads) highlight a reliable digital infrastructure.
This makes Tirana an ideal location for businesses and individuals who require high-speed internet for their daily activities. (It is especially important for digital nomads and those who work remotely.)
DurrES
Durres, a significant port city around 47 minutes from Tirana, provides strong internet performance with an average download speed of 56 Mbps and an upload speed of 31 Mbps. The data, derived from 5,441 tests, shows a stable range of download speeds from 47 Mbps to 60 Mbps and upload speeds from 24 Mbps to 34 Mbps. This stability ensures reliable internet access, supporting the needs of both residents and tourists.
VlorA
Based on the studied data, the internet speed in Vlora is also reliable. The average download speed here is 78 Mbps, and the upload speed is 46 Mbps, based on 2,519 tests. The speed range (63 Mbps to 89 Mbps for downloads and 34 Mbps to 56 Mbps for uploads) indicates a high-quality and consistent internet experience essential for both the tourism industry and the local population.
ShkodRA
Shkodra delivers one of the best internet performances in Albania, with an average download speed of 84 Mbps and an upload speed of 43 Mbps. This data, collected from 4,740 tests, shows a reliable speed range (74 Mbps to 92 Mbps for downloads and 32 Mbps to 50 Mbps for uploads), making Shkodra an attractive city for digital activities and remote work.
SarandA
Saranda, a city loved by expats, offers decent internet speeds with an average download speed of 47 Mbps and an upload speed of 41 Mbps. From 2,535 tests, the speed range is relatively narrow (43 Mbps to 49 Mbps for downloads and 36 Mbps to 44 Mbps for uploads), suggesting consistent performance for natives and tourists.
Berat
Berat, a city rich in history, provides moderate internet speeds. The average download speed is 43 Mbps, and the upload speed is 17 Mbps, based on 1,341 tests. The speed variability (41 Mbps to 50 Mbps for downloads and 15 Mbps to 19 Mbps for uploads) indicates that while the internet is sufficient for general use, there might be occasional fluctuations in speed.
Gjirokastra
Gjirokastra has the lowest average internet speeds among the cities listed, with 32 Mbps for downloads and 17 Mbps for uploads. Based on 1,017 tests, the speed range (26 Mbps to 41 Mbps for downloads and 15 Mbps to 19 Mbps for uploads) suggests that while the internet is stable, it may not support high-bandwidth activities as effectively as other cities.
All in All
Our analysis highlights the internet scene in Tirana and across Albania’s well-known centres. While some variability exists depending on service providers like Vodafone, Digicom, and One, connectivity in Tirana and several other cities generally stands out as stronger than others, as mentioned above. This snapshot underscores the ongoing digital evolution shaping city life, emphasizing the importance of reliable internet in our day-to-day experiences.
