Kruja

Krujë is a town steeped in Albanian history and is notably associated with the legendary figure Skanderbeg. Located in north central Albania, between Mount Krujë and the Ishëm River, Krujë is only 20 km away from the Albanian capital, Tirana. Krujë’s origins trace back to the ancient Illyrian tribe of the Albani. In 1190, it became the capital of the Principality of Arbër, the first medieval Albanian state, and later the capital of the Kingdom of Albania.

The town holds significant historical importance as the stronghold of Skanderbeg during the Ottoman sieges. Although it eventually fell to the Ottomans, Krujë played a role in the 1906 revolt against Ottoman rule and the subsequent declaration of Albanian independence in 1912. The town was also a focal point during the conflict between the Republic of Central Albania and the Principality of Albania in the 1910s, as well as during World War II resistance activities.

Krujë’s name is derived from the Albanian word for “fountain” or “water source,” which reflects the town’s historical water sources. Tourists can explore the rich history of Krujë through its museums, including the Skanderbeg Museum and the National Ethnographic Museum, both located near the iconic Krujë Castle.
