“We found there are only two countries in the world that allow Americans to stay as tourists for a year, Georgia and Albania.”

After some research, Albania stood out for its affordability, safety, and reputation for good food. Armed with little more than these promising qualities, the couple packed their bags and set off for a new chapter.

Once they arrived, Albania exceeded their expectations. They quickly fell in love with the country’s charm and decided to stay for a few years.

“We didn’t know much before coming here, but it didn’t take long to realize this was a place where we wanted to put down roots for a while.”

Building a Routine in Tirana

As a remote worker in real estate investments based in the U.S., Elijah’s workday starts late in the evening, around 4 p.m. Albanian time. This unconventional schedule has allowed him to adopt a routine that allows for both productivity and exploration of the new city.

“I have the entire day to wander around Tirana, explore the city, and soak in the culture. Then, in the evening, I shift gears to focus on work, evaluating investments and projects until midnight or later.”

Elijah has been pleasantly surprised by Albania’s digital infrastructure, particularly its fast and affordable internet.

“Back in America, I paid $60 for 200 Mbps, but here in Tirana, I get 600 Mbps for just $20. The cafes are also fantastic for remote work, with good WiFi and comfortable seating. It’s a refreshing change of scenery compared to working at home.”

Adjusting to Life in Albania

Moving to a new country requires some changes and adjustments, and Elijah has embraced these changes with an open mind. One of the biggest challenges for him? Adapting to Albania’s cash-based economy! (Cards are not accepted everywhere in Albania.)

“As an American, I’m used to not carrying cash at all. In the U.S., I hardly even use my wallet anymore thanks to Apple Pay. Here, I’ve had to get used to regularly withdrawing cash from ATMs.”

Another noticeable difference is the pace of life. Compared to the fast-paced lifestyle he was accustomed to in Texas, Albania, and much of Europe, he operates at a slower rhythm.

“Sometimes I enjoy the slower pace, but I still keep myself busy. I’m always exploring, running errands, or working on a project to maintain the level of activity I’m used to.”

When Elijah and his wife aren’t working, they’re out discovering the countless villages and hidden gems Albania has to offer.

“Exploring this country has been a highlight for us. The landscapes are beautiful, and every trip reveals something new to appreciate.”

From quiet mountain towns to coastal spots, the couple has been captivated by Albania’s beauty and the number of ‘hidden’ spots that are yet to be discovered by many!

Elijah’s work naturally keeps him connected to friends and colleagues in the U.S., making it easier to maintain those relationships despite the distance.

“Because I collaborate with my friends on projects, I get to stay in touch with them regularly. It’s a nice balance between staying grounded in my roots and building a new life here.”

“There are hundreds of cafes to work from, each with good WiFi and comfortable chairs. It’s an environment that’s both productive and inspiring for remote work.”
