Durrës is one the oldest cities in Albania that has it all. Interesting historical sites, culture, and beautiful beaches to explore.

As a traveller, I’m sure you’d want to get the most out of your bucket list, which is why we will be talking about the best things to do in Durrës, Albania.

Let’s get started!

Key Takeaways

  • Durrës is home to some of the best historical landmarks and attractions residents and tourists can explore.
  • “Durrës Castle” poses a significant importance.
  • Historical ruins like the Byzantine Forum or the Archaeological Museum are worth the visit.
  • Cultural attractions like Copacabana Beach or Abaia Winery are among the best things to do in Durrës, Albania.

Is Durrës Albania Safe?

Like any city, travellers can fall prey to tourist traps such as pickpocketing or overly expensive foods. However, Durrës is generally considered safe for tourists and locals alike.

To keep yourself safe, here are some general safety tips that have helped me stay safe during my travels:

  • Research your destination before travelling there.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid wearing flashy jewellery or carrying electronics while out and about.
  • Make photocopies of your documents.
  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi, as it is vulnerable to viruses.

If you want to visit the best landmarks in Albania, you might come across several in Durrës that are traveller-friendly and safe to visit.

Ready for an unforgettable adventure? Let’s explore the best places to visit in Durrës!

1) Explore The Ruins At the Byzantine Forum

Kick your adventure off by exploring the ruins at Byzantine Forum! Located in the centre of Durrës, it was an important site in the old city of Dyrrhachium (former Durrës). The forum is considered one of the best examples of Early Byzantine Period and Late Roman monuments.

The site was originally an open traditional market. However, now, it stands as a ruin, reminiscing on the lost history. It is almost eerie to see the modern market behind the standing pillars as you admire the view.

  • Location: Rruga “Aleksandër Goga”, Durrës, Albania
  • Opening Hours: 24/7
  • Entry Fees: None

2) Get Lost In The Archeological Museum

The Archeological Museum of Durrës, or Muzeu Arkeologjik i Durrësit was established in 1951. As one of the largest archaeological museums in Albania, it is located near the beach.

It is a great destination to visit as it showcases the extensive history of Albania, and if you’re into history, you’ll surely love it.

For instance, the museum consists of 3,204 artefacts found in a nearby Dyrrhachium’s ancient site. One of my favourite items there is the Roman funeral steles and stone sarcophagi.

  • Location: Rruga Taulantia 32, Durrës 2000, Albania
  • Opened in: 1951
  • Entry Price: 4.05 Euro

3) Visit The Durrës Amphitheatre

Moving on, the Durrës Amphitheatre is an adventurous Roman amphitheatre in the heart of Durrës. Its construction began under Emperor Trajan around the 2nd century A.D. but was destroyed twice due to earthquakes in the sixth and tenth centuries.

Wanna know my favourite part about visiting the Amphitheatre? It’s an elliptical shape with 132.4-metre axes comprised of a 61.4 x 42.2 x 20-metre arena. Moreover, it is built on a hillside that slopes, making it an interesting place to capture memorable photos.

  • Location: Rruga “Kalasa”, Durrës, Albania
  • Opening Hours: 09:00 am to 04:00 pm (Saturday, Monday – Thursday), 09:00 am to 07:00 pm (Friday) and 09:00 am to 02:00 pm (Sunday)

4) Explore The Forgotten Durrës CASTLE

The Durrës Castle should be the next destination on your Albanian itinerary. The castle was enclosed by city walls back in the 5th century.

While it remained closed for the majority of Durrës’ history, in 2022, it announced its continuation of the restoration work. The project’s main aim was to improve upon the tower’s infrastructure and preserve its cultural history.

  • Location: Durrës, Albania
  • Opening Hours: 24/7

5) Spend some time at Abaia Winery And Vineyard

Welcome to the Abaia Winery! A unique wine canteen built on a preserved bunker, where the magic of fermentation unfolds. Located amidst picturesque vineyards, the winery is a haven for those who love winemaking and want to try it for themselves.

The itinerary includes partaking in private tours, barrel tastings, and building personal experiences. Moreover, you can try a variety of red, white and semisweet wines. And if that’s not enough, you can simply catch up with a loved one while trying their in-house Raki.

  • Location: Rruga Arapaj, Durrës 2021, Albania

6) Admire Durrës From Afar At Sfinski

If there’s one way to describe the Skinski in a few words, it would be “picturesque haven for aesthetic enthusiasts.”. Sfinski is an architectural creation whose profile perfectly mimics that of the Sphinx in Egypt.

While it does not pose any major significance in the history of Durrës or have any interesting facts, it is a gorgeous place to visit in general. The cream and off-white steps pose as the perfect place to get wedding pictures taken, with the sea acting as an exquisite background for your Instagram photos!

  • Location: Vollga Durrës, Rruga Taulantia, Durrës, Albania
  • Opening Hours: 24/7

7) Relax At The Copacabana Beach

Music and fashion were always the fashion at the Copacabana, no? At least that’s what Barry Manilow thought when he wrote Copacabana. I digress! If all else fails, Copacabana Beach is probably one of my favourite places to visit in Durrës.

It has a nice relaxing atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Moreover, you can go for a quick dip or choose to tan on the beach. If you have kids, set up a volleyball tent and partake in a tantalising volleyball match with them! Place bets on who gets to buy cold milkshakes after the city match is done!

8) Read About The History Of The Royal Villa Of Durrës

Still looking for more things to do in Durrës, Albania? Visiting the Royal Villa of Durrës should be next on your backpacking list! The attraction served as the summer residence of King Zog during the reign of the Monarchy and remains a symbol of the infamous system.

The villa is present on the Durrës hill, standing 98 meters above sea level. Travellers can admire the stunning sea views from the three sides. Another really interesting fact about the Royal Villa is that its construction is done so it forms the shape of an eagle.

  • Location: Kodër Vilë, Durrës
  • Opened in 1937

My Personal Takeaway

Durrës is a city full of wonders. It has some interesting historical attractions, such as castles, museums, and amphitheatres fit for their specific purposes. Moreover, since it’s a coastal city, you can always relax near the sea after a long day of exploring.

My personal favourite attraction has to be Sfinski. Though it holds no major significance in Albanian history, it is a breathtaking place to sit and watch the waves say hello to you.

If you are searching for things to do in Durrës, I hope my guide helped you pick your new favourite activity! And, if you want to move to Durrës, you might want to check out this property for sale in Durrës!
