Because indeed, it was a dream for so many. A lot of Albanians never stopped believing and did everything to move to the US, sacrificing their stability in Albania, years spent with their families, and some even gave up on their relationships.

For that, and for other reasons, living in a time when so many people are moving from the US to Albania feels like the reverse of that dream. Strange, yet very interesting to me.

But what’s even more interesting is that so many people have said almost the exact same thing when it comes to life here. Perspectives that have shifted that of my own as a local, and made me see my country in different lights.

Expats describe the move as a chance to experience peace, to breathe again. To swap a frenetic pace for a simpler, more intentional rhythm.

“Settling into a new culture doesn’t feel foreign to me anymore.” (Expat in Albania)

Over and over, I’ve heard that life here gives people the balance they felt was missing in the States. As one person put it:

“In America, even going out for a simple coffee is something you have to schedule in advance.”

But the peace of mind, and available people are only some of the factors among many others, that make life in this newly discovered Mediterranean heaven feel so natural, and fitting.

Life is Slower and Simpler

Image source: Valter Zhara, Pexels Horse riding in Durrës

Now, while this is not for everyone, it feels like a lot of expats appreciate a slower and simpler pace of life, and most of them seem to have found that in cities near the sea, such as Durrës, Vlorë, or Sarandë.

Life in coastal destinations comes with natural beauty and daily calm: mornings by the water, evening strolls, sea breezes carrying through routines.

“I start my mornings with the sound of the Ionian Sea and a walk on the beach in Sarandë. There’s no rat race here. People aren’t rushing. They’re just living.” (Expat in Albania)

Those drawn to the coast often find a peaceful haven, yet it’s still close enough to Tirana when they want the bustle.

Retiring or Slowing Down in Albania

Many Americans who arrive later in life talk about a sense of relief. Think of it as giving yourself a “free trial” before committing fully to life in a new country. Expectations don’t always match reality, and it’s better to discover that early. For example, I spoke with an American who had planned to settle in Vlora this year, and after spending some time there, he realised it wasn’t the right fit and eventually chose to return to the U.S.; a reminder that visiting first can save you from bigger disappointments later.

And if you need assistance with the process of relocating to Albania, or any information you might need before making the move, we are here for you.

Have questions about relocating? Some continue their U.S. jobs remotely, benefiting from U.S. salaries while spending locally. Others build small businesses or work in service fields, especially in Tirana, where the expat and local communities mix easily.

What stands out is the work-life balance; people often mention that while they may earn less than in the U.S., their money goes further, and they have more free time and social energy left at the end of the day.

How Much Money Do You Need to Live Comfortably in Tirana?

Families and Everyday Life

For families, the appeal is in raising children in a society that values time together. Healthcare and education are generally more affordable, and daily routines are less frantic than in many U.S. cities.

Parents often say they appreciate the emphasis on community, neighbourhoods feel involved, kids spend a lot of time outdoors, and there’s less pressure for constant achievement.

However, there are not many international schools in Albania (with most of them being in Tirana), which could be a bit limiting.

By the way, if you’re moving to Tirana soon and have no idea what the neighbourhoods here feel like, I’ve covered a full guide you can check out here –>

Tirana Neighbourhoods Guide 2025

Singles and Social Circles

Image source: Valter Zhara, Pexels Three girls sitting on a cliff

For younger expats or those moving alone, Tirana is often the first stop. The city is dense, social, and walkable. It’s easy to meet people at cafés, gyms, or language exchanges.

Along the coast, life slows down but remains equally social, especially in the evenings when locals and expats alike take part in the ‘xhiro’, the daily walk. Dating and friendships usually grow out of these everyday social circles, rather than through apps or formal setups.

There are lots of Facebook groups that help people become part of a community. But also, you can participate in different events. as they’re being held often, as well as try fun and interesting activities.

Join our WhatsApp channel to get updates on life in Albania

Adjustments and Challenges

Life in Albania isn’t without its bumps. The bureaucracy can be confusing at first, and the language barrier takes patience. Some expats admit that the first months felt overwhelming as they figured out paperwork, banks, or leases.

But most also say these challenges fade with time, especially once you pick up some Albanian and lean on fellow expats for advice. The payoff is a lifestyle that feels far less stressful than the one they left behind.

Living in Albania Pros and Cons (From a Local’s Perspective) [2025]

Final Thoughts: Is Albania Right for You?

If you’re craving a lifestyle that lets your budget go further, your days feel calmer, and your community feel closer, Albania could surprise you in the best ways. Whether you’re drawn by the sea, the studios, or simply stepping into a life that feels more yours, you’ll likely find the change meaningful.
