Things to do in Tirana Christmas Market

Explore the Tirana Christmas Market with the best things to do, food spots, carousel rides, tours, and festive activities in the city center.

Tirana Christmas Market

Christmas in Tirana comes with a variety of fun activities you can do to enjoy the season to the fullest. The streets are lit up, and the holiday spirit has arrived on every corner of the city.

As the tradition goes, the best way to experience the season is to visit Tirana’s Christmas market, which takes place in Skanderbeg Square every year.

Here’s what you can do there:

1. Take a Picture at the Christmas Tree

The main Christmas tree in Skanderbeg Square is impossible to miss. It’s the heart of the festive area and the perfect spot for photos, especially in the evening.

You can also snap a picture with Santa Claus, yes, he’s usually around for photos too, hehe 🎅

2. Try a Romantic Carousel Ride

Right next to the Christmas market, you’ll find the ‘famous’ carousel, where you can take a ride. It’s a fun, unique experience if you want to enjoy a slower moment in the middle of the city. The nice thing is that the carousel doesn’t disappear after the holidays; you can actually find it here all year round.

3. Tirana Magical Walking Tour

One of the nicest ways to fully immerse yourself in Tirana’s Christmas spirit is by joining a walking tour guide. You’ll walk through the city’s festive areas, with streets lit up by colourful lights, and seasonal decorations that give Tirana a completely different feel.

Most tours pass through Skanderbeg Square, the Tree of Light, and decorated streets around the city center, with the chance to attend open-air Christmas performances and visit beautifully decorated churches, including St. Paul’s Cathedral. A warm drink is usually included, making the experience even cosier.

4. Treat Yourself to Assi Waffles

Waffles are a Christmas market classic, and Assi Waffles is right in the centre. Expect warm, freshly made waffles with a variety of toppings; simple, sweet, and always a good idea

5. Enjoy the Amusement

While there aren’t as many outdoor shows as in previous years, you can still catch occasional performances and small festive activities around the square. It’s worth slowing down and seeing what’s happening as you walk through the area.

6. Take a Festive Walk Around the City

Even without a plan, simply walking around Skanderbeg Square and the nearby streets is part of the experience. The Christmas lights and decorations make the city feel cosy and lively, especially after sunset.

7. Visit a Souvenir Shop

This is a great time to pick up small gifts or locally made souvenirs. Around the market area, you’ll find stalls and shops selling handmade items, ornaments, and Albanian-inspired keepsakes.

8. Warm Up with a Hot Drink

End your visit with a warm coffee or hot chocolate at one of the many caffè around the square. Tirana’s café culture doesn’t slow down in winter; if anything, it gets cosier.

9. Taste Fresh Pasta at Pasta ’n Tigan

If you’re craving comfort food, Pasta ’n Tigan is a must. This Italian-style concept serves freshly cooked pasta prepared in a large pan or mixed directly inside a Parmigiano cheese wheel. It’s warm, filling, and perfect for cold winter evenings.

Tirana Feels Different in Winter

While the city’s not super crowded, like it is during the busier seasons, it’s still pretty crowded with people gathering and enjoying the atmosphere of the city. It feels different, in a good way, to get to experience the city transforming into a winter wonderland, full of lights to be wowed by, and activities to try.
