Sometimes, a single moment is all it takes to change your life.
Pour Elena Daniel, that moment happened on an ordinary morning in Boston, when, out of nowhere, the thought of moving to Albania popped into her mind. It wasn’t part of a long-term plan or a carefully thought-out decision. It just… clicked. “It felt like a ‘now or never’ kind of thing,” she recalls.
By the end of that day, she had booked her flight and rented an apartment in Durrës. Two weeks later, she landed in Tirana.
For someone who had once immigrated from the Soviet Union to the U.S., starting fresh in a new country wasn’t unfamiliar.
“Settling into a new culture doesn’t feel foreign to me anymore,” Elena says.
But what she found in Albania was something unexpected: peace, warmth, and a rhythm of life that felt just right.
And today, we have the pleasure of sharing Elena’s story with you, hopefully, to move you, inspire you, (like it did us), and maybe even remind you to follow that quiet voice inside.
Take a moment, and enjoy the read!
Life at a Different Pace
After years of living in fast-paced cities like New York and Boston, Albania offered something Elena didn’t know she needed: a slower, quieter way of life. Now semi-retired, she spends her days consulting remotely as an analyst and health coach, working on personal projects, and finishing her books on alternative health.
“I start my mornings with the sound of the Ionian Sea and a walk on the beach in Sarandë,” she says. “There’s no rat race here. People aren’t rushing. They’re just living.”
That shift in pace, Elena says, has helped her reconnect with herself and with the things that truly matter.
Finding Joy in the Simple Things
What struck Elena most about Albania wasn’t just the beauty…though she admits the mountains, beaches, and ancient towns are breathtaking…but the simplicity of life.
Here, families stroll together on weekends. Neighbors chat on balconies. Fathers are deeply involved in their children’s lives. It’s a sharp contrast to the often individualistic nature of life in the U.S.
“There’s a balance in Albanian families that’s hard to find elsewhere”.
That closeness and sense of community made her feel at home, even as a newcomer.
A New Relationship with Food
As someone deeply passionate about health and nutrition, Albania’s fresh, natural food was another welcome surprise. “The natural, chemical-free produce here is unlike anything you’ll find in the U.S”, she says.
Elena also enjoys experimenting with the locally sourced ingredients she finds at markets and is especially fascinated by the variety of herbs that Albanians use in their daily cooking.
“The food markets are a joy to explore, and the herbs Albanians use are fascinating. Seeing Mali tea served in bars or fresh herbs sold next to bread is something I’ve never seen elsewhere.”
Of course, not every dining experience is perfect, some of the urban restaurants have yet to reach the level of sophistication found in major cities like Boston or Manhattan. However, dining experiences at restaurants such as “Mrizi i Zanave” and “Albanica Family Winery” have left a lasting impression on her, with meals that she describes as unforgettable.
Let’s Talk About Albanian People
One of the things Elena talks about most is the kindness of the Albanian people. Even when there’s a language barrier, people go out of their way to help, she shared with us. Landlords, neighbours, even strangers at the market, reflect their kindness.
“I’ve always felt welcome here.”
She’s also been moved by the spirit of entrepreneurship she sees everywhere, family businesses, young people returning from abroad to help out, traditions being honoured while still embracing the future.
“It’s a beautiful mix,” she says.
Nature That Inspires
From the mountains of Theth to the coastal quiet of Karavasta, Albania’s nature never stop amazing Elena. She calls Saranda her retreat…a place that inspires her writing and brings her a sense of peace she didn’t know was missing.
“Places like Shkodër, Theth’s Blue Eye, and Karavasta Lagoon feel like hidden gems waiting to be discovered.”
Even the urban areas are inspiring. The cleanliness and abundance of clean water, as well as the beautiful mountain streams and well-maintained olive groves, speak to how much Albanians care for their environment.
“It’s incredible to see how much respect the locals have for their land,” she adds.
Safety and Simplicity in Albania
Coming from the fast-paced, often chaotic cities of the U.S., Elena has found Albania remarkably peaceful and safe. She appreciates the low levels of violent crime and the strong sense of community accountability.
“There’s no visible homelessness or drug issues like in Boston or New York. The environment here feels genuinely safe,” she says, grateful for the calm and security that Albania offers.
This peace of mind has given her the freedom to explore without fear, whether she’s walking alone in the city or venturing into rural areas.
“You can feel the difference.”
Compared to American cities, Albania feels like another world. “There’s a sense of safety here that’s hard to explain,” Elena says. “You don’t see homelessness, you don’t see drug problems on the streets. It just feels safe.”
She often walks alone, explores small towns, and enjoys the kind of calm that’s hard to come by in big cities.
Growing Roots in Albania
Elena reflects on the lessons she has learned during her time in Albania, particularly the importance of keeping an open mind and setting realistic expectations.
“You can’t expect Albania to conform to your home country’s standards. You have to embrace it for what it is,” she advises newcomers.
She encourages people to explore different regions before making a decision about where to settle, citing her own journey from Durrës to Sarandë as an example of the importance of finding a place that resonates with you.
Elena also feels strongly about giving back to her adopted community. She hopes to teach English to local children, especially in orphanages, as a way of expressing her gratitude for the opportunities Albania has given her.
“Being part of a place means contributing to it.”
A Reminder That Change Can Be Beautiful
La décision d'Elena de déménager en Albanie has brought her an unexpected sense of peace, fulfilment, and purpose. “This country has been full of surprises,” she says, noting how every day in Albania offers something new to discover.
Here’s an inspiring advice for those considering a similar move:
“Approach it with positivity and an open heart. Albania will reward you in ways you can’t imagine.”
Elena’s journey is a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most unplanned, unexpected paths lead to the most fulfilling destinations.
Keep an open heart, take things as they come, and don’t expect everything to look like home…because maybe, just maybe, you’ll find something even better.
