It\u2019s autumn. That time of year when the leaves put on their best show, the weather can\u2019t decide what it wants to be, the streets are covered in warm colours, and Albania definitely looks like a postcard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the perfect time to explore: not too hot, not too crowded, just the perfect weather (minus when it rains!), and a quieter vibe compared to summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And since it’s already October, I thought I’d share some of the best autumn destinations in Albania to consider visiting this year. Starting with one of my favourites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gjirokast\u00ebr<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gjirokastra, often called “the city of stones”, is one of those destinations that instantly makes you slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s part of the UNESCO's verdensarvsliste<\/a>; characterised by the cobblestone streets, the old Ottoman-style houses, and the mountain views that feel straight out of a storybook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Albanian author Ismail Kadare wrote endlessly about this town (his birthplace), and it\u2019s easy to see why. Every corner has a sense of nostalgia, from the steep alleys to the sound of footsteps echoing off the stone walls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kind of feeling that stays with you, even long after visiting.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main highlight is the Gjirokast\u00ebr Castle, which overlooks the entire valley, but don\u2019t skip the beautiful Zekate House, Sk\u00ebnduli House, and the Ethnographic Museum if you want to peek into traditional local life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I like to think of Berat as Gjirokast\u00ebr\u2019s sister, and while this might sound funny, they do in fact share a lot of similarities, yet at the same time, each town has its own charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also part of the UNESCO's verdensarvsliste<\/a>, Berat is called \u201cthe city of a thousand windows,\u201d<\/em> a name that comes from its rows of white Ottoman houses stacked on the hillside, all facing each other with dozens of windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s one of those places that look like a painting, especially in the soft light of autumn.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mix of warm colors, old stone streets, and that calm river running through the town makes Berat a perfect autumn destination in Albania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Autumn is a great time to visit Pogradec<\/a>. The city turns golden, the air feels calm, and everything slows down in the best way possible. The lakeside views are even prettier this time of year, with reflections of orange and red trees dancing on the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can take a peaceful walk in the famous Tushemisht village, where the classic Albanian movie \u201cZonja nga Qyteti\u201d<\/em> was filmed, visit the National Park of Drilon (highly suggested), or drive to Lin, a charming lakeside village known for its stone houses, quiet streets, and incredible sunsets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voskopoj\u00eb\/Dardh\u00eb…or Both<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you love quiet mountain villages, you’ll love Voskopoja and Dardha, two gems located just a short drive away from Kor\u00e7\u00eb and perfect for an autumn road trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voskopoj\u00eb was once one of the most important cultural centers in the Balkans, and even today, it keeps that old charm with its stone houses, pine forests, and historic churches hidden around every corner. <\/p>\n\n\n

Dardh\u00eb, on the other hand, feels a bit more like a postcard, with wooden chalets, mountain lodges, and cosy guesthouses that make you want to stay in with a cup of tea.<\/p>\n\n\n

In autumn, the whole area turns golden; it’s perfect for a walk, photography, or simply slowing down and enjoying the crisp air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking for that real<\/em> mountain escape, head north to L\u00ebpush\u00eb, Vermosh, and Tamar\u00eb; three villages tucked deep in the Albanian Alps, right near the Montenegrin border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This area is breathtaking in autumn. The forests turn shades of orange and red, the air feels crisp, and the whole place gets this peaceful, almost untouched vibe. It\u2019s perfect if you love scenic drives, hiking, or just being surrounded by nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u00ebpush\u00eb is known for its wide valleys and views that look like they belong on a postcard. Vermosh is a quiet mountain village where you\u2019ll find traditional guesthouses, hearty local food, and warm hospitality. And Tamar\u00eb, with its river and stone bridge, makes a lovely stop for a coffee or lunch with a view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to see Albania\u2019s wild side, without the summer crowds, this region is a dream in autumn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Park of Qaf\u00ebshtam\u00eb<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Named after the Qaf\u00eb-Shtam\u00eb passage, this park transforms into a dreamy destination in autumn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forests are filled with pine trees, oaks, and maples that paint the whole area in golden shades. The drive there is scenic too, especially when the sun hits the hills and everything looks like it\u2019s glowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the highlights here is the Queen Mother\u2019s Fountain (Kroi i N\u00ebn\u00ebs Mbret\u00ebresh\u00eb), famous for its clear, drinkable water that locals say has healing qualities. There are also several marked trails where you can walk through the forest, spot wildlife, and enjoy mountain views, especially from the higher points around the pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can never go wrong with a road trip to Kruj\u00eb. This small but lovely historical town, with significant importance in Albania’s history and culture, is one of the best destinations to visit during autumn. It’s not too far away from Tirana, and the paths are so scenic you’re gonna love the journey there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weather is pleasant during autumn, and there’s a list of things you can do there<\/a>, including visiting the famous, traditional bazaar and shopping for souvenirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valbona is one of the most beautiful destinations in Albania all year round, but there’s definitely something magical about exploring the area during autumn. The valley turns into a painting of red, orange, and gold, and every step you take feels like walking through a living postcard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s nothing prettier than the different shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating hundreds of different patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most beautiful way to get to Valbona is by taking the ferry across Komani Lake. The cruise is about 2 and a half hours, and the views are unmatched! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Theth is no longer a hidden gem. This lovely small village, located within the Shkodra country, is one of the locals’ and tourists’ favourite destinations to visit, and it’s easy to see why. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Theth is home to some of the country’s most iconic spots like the Blue Eye, the Grunas waterfall, and the Lock-in tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spending a few days here feels like stepping into another world. Mornings start with mist rolling over the mountains, and evenings end with the smell of wood fires and home-cooked food from cosy guesthouses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In autumn, Theth\u2019s trails are even more beautiful, covered in golden leaves and surrounded by silence, making it the perfect place to disconnect and just breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dajti Nationalpark<\/h2>\n\n\n

Dajti National Park is one of the easiest and best day trips from Tirana<\/a>. Just a short drive or cable car ride away from the city centre, it\u2019s the perfect spot to escape the noise and breathe in some fresh mountain air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that the weather\u2019s cooler and the air feels crisp, walking through Dajti\u2019s forest trails hits differently. The trees turn golden, the city looks tiny from above, and if you take the Dajti Ekspres cable car, you\u2019ll get some of the best panoramic views of Tirana and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s an ideal place for a quick autumn getaway<\/a>, whether you\u2019re up for hiking, grabbing lunch at the mountaintop restaurant, or just enjoying the quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Autumn might just be the most underrated time to visit Albania. The air is crisp, the views are incredible, and the country feels calm in the best way possible. While you can’t tan or go for a swim, there are so many beautiful spots worth a visit, such as Theth, Valbona, Gjirokastra, Berat, Kruja, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wherever you decide to go, you\u2019ll find warmth…not just in the colours, but in the people too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
